Alex was a natural musician and was a singer and multi-instrumentalist with great charisma and humour. He became a professional musician alongside his work as an artist, working with many local musicians in West Somerset and with his own much-loved band Dr Jazz. He also played tuba for many years in the West Somerset Brass band.

He also loved to draw and paint musicians at work, including The Michael Nyman Band, and Henry's Bootblacks (Bristol), as well as many bands performing at the 606 Club in Chelsea, London, where he would often go to see his bass player son-in-law Andy Hamill perform.
